Actor Carroll O'Connor, whose son committed suicide after a long struggle with drug addiction, advocated opening a discussion about drug policy options in an article for Parade Magazine (Carroll O'Connor, "Let's Get Real," Parade Magazine, July 16, 1995, p. 8).
O'Connor also wrote that the U.S. should spend more money on interdiction and less on street-level busts, and advocated the implementation of a national identity card system and education programs for parents.
