October 1995

Actor Carroll O'Connor, whose son committed suicide after a long struggle with drug addiction, advocated opening a discussion about drug policy options in an article for Parade Magazine (Carroll O'Connor, "Let's Get Real," Parade Magazine, July 16, 1995, p. 8).

O'Connor also wrote that the U.S. should spend more money on interdiction and less on street-level busts, and advocated the implementation of a national identity card system and education programs for parents.

O'Connor and Parade Magazine have requested readers write with their drug policy suggestions. NewsBriefs readers should address correspondence to Carroll O'Connor at P.O. Box 5099, Grand Central Station, New York, NY 10163-5099.
