11,000 Pounds of Cocaine Seized in Second Largest Maritime Bust

DRUG TRAFFICKING

June 1993

The United States Coast Guard seized a freighter carrying 11,000 pounds of cocaine May 9, the second largest maritime drug bust in history (Donna Gehrke, "11,000 Lbs. Of Cocaine Seized On Freighter," Miami Herald, 5/10/93, 1B).

The seizure occurred after a Navy helicopter spotted the freighter 300 miles south of Panama. The ship was on route from Ecuador to Mexico. The largest maritime seizure occurred on October 2, 1989, when 12,201 pounds of cocaine were seized at sea.
