MEDICINAL MARIJUANA

January 1993

Surgeon General-designate Joycelyn Elders, M.D., director of the Arkansas Health Department, said she favors making marijuana available for medicinal use, citing a variety of possible applications (AP, "Choice for Surgeon General Favors Medicinal Marijuana Use," Washington Post, 12/20/92, A16).

Dr. Elders, who is expected to be nominated this summer, said marijuana could be useful in treating glaucoma, for alleviating therapeutically-induced nausea, and stimulating appetite in AIDS or cancer patients.
