Mother Who Killed Addict-Daughter Receives Probation

SENTENCING

February 1993

A woman who pled guilty to shooting her 48-year-old daughter to death was sentenced to probation after telling authorities that she was pushed to despair by her drug-addicted daughter's disturbing behavior (From news services, "No Prison for Mom in Addict's Death," Washington Times, 12/15/92, A6).

Sixty-eight-year-old Daisy Hutson was sentenced to five years probation on pleading guilty to second degree manslaughter and third-degree weapon possession, according to a spokesman for Queens, New York District Attorney Richard Brown. In conferring the lenient sentence, Brown said "he could not condone that taking of a human life" but "couldn't help but understand the depth of Mrs. Hutson's despair and the extent of her anguish."

Hutson, who could have received 25 years in prison, told police that after her daughter became a cocaine addict she degenerated into a dangerous person who turned her mother's life into a nightmare.
