Drug Dealer May Have Set Bombs in Bombay |
INTERNATIONALApril 1993 |
A wave of bombings in Bombay, India that killed 232 people, wounded more than 1400, and damaged major buildings, may have been set by a now-fugitive drug trafficker, Bombay police said (Edward Gargan, "Bombay Bombs Tied To Reputed Drug Dealer," New York Times, 3/19/93, A7).
Police implicated Ibrahim Abdul Memon, saying the Memon family wished to incite chaos to facilitate drug smuggling operations. Memon reportedly fled to Dubai. Organized drug smuggling and other organized crime has been on the rise in Bombay, but police have made few, if any, major arrests in recent years.
